2020.06.22

On February of this year, Principal Dr. Bing-Jean Lee (李秉乾) and the Dean of ISTM, Dr. Peter J. Sher (佘日新), went to Purdue University to take 10 sets of 1:8 scale race cars back to Taiwan. ISTM’s uniquely integrated, innovative courses allowed students to experience, simulate, and realistically operate them. After undergoing two weeks of programming code, practicing, and online simulation, engineering students of Purdue University and San Jose State University (SJSU) underwent intense matches on the day of the competition. After the initial test runs, the students immediately settled down to adjust and discuss the parts that needed to be adjusted after the official competition and worked strenuously to be ranked in the competition.

  • After the official competition commenced, the first group of students amazingly finished the first match in just 11 seconds. Other participants were stimulated and fought to compete for the best performance in the shortest amount of time. Even if they went out of bounds, they were not discouraged to improve. In the end, the first group won the award for completing a lap in the fastest amount of time (11 seconds), while the fifth group won the highest stability award by completing five laps in a total of 103”58 seconds. Both Peter J. Sher and Chief Executive Ju-Chuan Wu (吳如娟) were touched by the students’ efforts. Both the Progress Award and Research Spirit Award encouraged these hard-working students.
  • Aside from this competition being recognized by both the dean and the advisors, AWS experts also excessively praised the ISTM students’ performance. Besides their astonishing achievements, we also learned that the students were deeply moved by the competition; they definitely learned the true essence of “having fun and making history.”

The award for completing a lap in the fastest amount of time: Group 1

Highest Stability Award: Group 5

The fifth group comprised of Kevin Lee (李渲孺) and three foreign students. However, because the foreign students were forced to return to their countries once their visa expired on the day of the competition, Kevin shouldered the high expectations of his three team members and earned the Highest Stability Award in one fell swoop.

Dean’s Special Award: Group 3
