2017 Workshop on New Developments in Business Analytics or Big Data

The world is experiencing the expansion of massive data, its amounts, categories, and speed has continuously reaching unpreceded height.

  • Hence, it is extremely important to use wisely of statistical method on big data in making decisions. Under the aid of Mathematics Research Promotion Center, 2017 Workshop on New Developments in Business Analytics or Big Data is jointly organized by SJSU-FCU Dual-Degree Bachelor’s Program in Business Analytics, International School of Technology and Management and the Department of Statistics, College of Business, Feng Chia University. The workshop is aimed to explore the newest statistical model and method, using it in analyzing business data or other massive data, and building model or making prediction in assisting the administration’s decision-making. This workshop will be held on 3rd-4thAugust, 2017, its targets are to help the participants understand and learn the advanced analytical and statistical method of massive data. Scholars from Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan would be invited to share their newest development theoretically and methodologically, and their own experiences in analytical field. The proposed advanced analysis can be used to solve problems, as well as to make decisions in many functional areas, such as financial, economic, and risk management.
  • The featured speakers are all big data related scholars, including Dr. Philip Yu from the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science, Hong Kong University. He is in charge of a new degree that HKU launched in 2015 -- Degree of Bachelor of Science (Major in Decision Analytics) (BSc). Another invited speaker is Dr. Mike K.P. So from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He is the program advisor of Master of Science in Business Analytics launched in 2017. Dr. Ying Chen from Department of Statistics and Applied Probability, National Singapore University is an expert in financial statistics, she will share her experiences in dealing with big data. Dr. Amanda Chu from Hang Seng Management College has her unique experiences in analyzing massive business questionnaire or questionnaire with sensitive questions. There were also domestic experts and professors from the Department of Statistics, FCU who shared related issues on big data. This was a chance for discussions and exchange for the organizers including Big Data Center, FCU Master-Program in Finance Analytics, SJSU-FCU Dual-Degree Bachelor’s Program in Business Analytics. How to integrate massive data, identifying the hidden information and chances in big data and using statistical method to explore its value would be our biggest challenges and directions in the future. The main aim of the workshop is to gather experts’ opinions and viewpoints on big data related theme and to raise new research methodology. We hope that this workshop is helpful in gathering computing technology and statistical method to solve big data challenges.
  • There will be a seminar between the professors and students of SJSU-FCU Dual-Degree Bachelor’s Program in Business Analytics and foreign speakers on 5th August. The speakers will share their experiences on dealing with business big data and related issues.
