Innovation in teaching and international exchanges of faculty at ISTM
2017.09.01
Traditional teaching and learning approaches no longer provide students the knowledge and skills to face the challenges of our fast-paced and ever-change world of information. ISTM strives for excellence in teaching. We encourage regular faculty visits and exchanges to promote innovation in teaching. We invite faculty members from our partner universities to give our students lectures/seminars and to share teaching methodologies and research findings with our faculty members. We also fund our faculty members to visit our partner universities to learn from their well-established programs or courses and to develop closer tie and network.
Purdue First-Year Engineering Course: “Transforming Ideas to Innovation”
- In August 2017, Dr. Ray Liang and Dr. Feng- Chi Liu visited Purdue for one month and were able to see firsthand the learning activities and teaching approaches that were conducted in one of the Purdue First-Year Engineering courses – Transforming Ideas to Innovation. This is a 2-part course that emphasizes in-class assignments, hands-on approach, teamwork and student-centered teaching. A lot of the concepts and curriculum design of this course are implemented in the current Innovation Project courses of the Purdue-FCI program and RMIT-FCU program. The training process of this course provides students solid foundations in analysis, design and modeling and also hands-on opportunities to apply their skills in semi-open design and open design projects.
