Message to Future Students
Prof. Chen-Jui Liang, Assistant Professor, ISTM
I am the lecturer for innovation project in ISTM since 2017. Before giving these course, we have been invited to participate in a one-month teaching observation and communication in Purdue University, USA, based on our international cooperation and with the funding supported by MOST project “The study of 4i engineering talent cultivation: the co-learning program of engineering innovative teaching model in Purdue University”. By virtue of this project, we introduce and integrate the curriculum structure, core concept and teaching goal of “Idea to Innovation” into our curriculum. We expect our students can experience the comprehensive learning environment and process, including both traditional lecture and practical courses, same as the leading universities in the world. Our students will be able to communicate and compete with students in USA/Australia after completing our course training.
In the teaching plan, we will help our students to build up their own ability of problem scoping, information literacy, data mining, critical & innovation thinking, process planning, idea fluency, design/creation, implementing/operating, measurement/evaluation and solution quality in sequence by project/problem based learning methods. Simultaneously, the corresponding concepts and professional skills, such as engineering/business ethic, teamwork, professional communication, process awareness, evidence based decision, will also be established within these modules. At the last section of the class, we also try to integrate innovation project with other professional modules to complete student’s core competence and apply it to their own forms.
To Compare with grade 1-9 curriculum, there are less restricts and constraints in your college life. Furthermore, many of you will be away from home and join a brand new adventure of living independently. Self-management is the life lesson you should practice start from here. Please be aware that every coin has two sides, there is only a fine line between indulgence and freedom.
In the two year studying at ISTM, you will learn specialty knowledge & skills; adapt to diverse teaching strategies; and survive from the fully English learning environment. You need to well prepare yourself in this limited duration, and make sure that you have enough competitiveness to face challenges of study abroad. Based on personal past experience, studying in university is never like spent your time in Disneyland, especially in the leading universities. This may be your final step/chance before you enter this realistic society.
In the end, wish you can master your time with hard working and happy learning in ISTM, and make it the most memorable part of your life.
